SCENTS and SENSE-ABILITIES: OLFACTION
Perhaps our most popular course. This seminar goes into great technical detail the why's and wherefores of a dog's olfactory system and it's capabilities. We cover what it is exactly that dogs are "keying" on in various types of scent-work. How to establish a limbic system response in the dog to discriminate one odor from another. How to condition the "alert", and an overview of many types of scent work, Narcotics (NDD), Explosives (EOD), Cadaver (HRD), Mold, Termites, and others. This is a very information intensive day, and recommended for serious dog enthusiasts, professional handlers, and trainers.
"DOGMA"
The basic tenets of positive reinforcement, motivational training are covered in this course, in detail. The principles put forth are universal to virtually all types of dog training, from Basic Obedience to the most advanced task training and scent work. Follow these tenets, extrapolate on their concepts and you will be on the road to successful dog training and handling. The course will guide you in how to get and maintain focus and control, how to train incrementally, how to communicate with your dog (it's a two way street), and how to make sure he succeeds at each step of the way. This course is recommended for pet dog owners, any dog enthusiast, and professional handlers.
TRACKING and TRAILING
A technical look at man tracking, whether for SAR work or Suspect Apprehension. The principles discussed will be found to be applicable in numerous situations, even to realizing exactly what it is your gun dog is doing as he hunts. We go over the differences between Tracking and Trailing. Exactly what scents a dog "keys" on, and why. How temperature, moisture, and wind affect these scents. Olfaction, thermal plumes, scent bands, vegetative and hard surface tracking are all touched on, as is an overview of the types of tracking, the sport of tracking, and the processing of negatives. A fascinating and information filled day, this course is recommended for dog enthusiasts and professional handlers and trainers.
CANINE-OLOGY
For lack of a better term...this course covers some of the inter-relationships between K9 Physiology, K9 Psychology, and K9 Neurobiology. How one affects the next, and the next, and how your training can take advantage of these cause and effect relationships. The concept of "Alpha" will be discussed at some length - it's not what you think - and how the psychology of it all mellows out some seemingly unrelated problems. How dogs perceive things through their senses and through their psyche. How nutrition, training and activities affect all of the above, and how you can use them to make your training go more smoothly, and make your "best friend" truly the best... Basic "drives" will also be discussed at length, what exactly makes them "kick in", how to "flip" drives, and most accurately steer the dog towards your training goals using these drives. The Limbic System and it's importance in training will be discussed as well. This seminar is recommended for pet owners, and dog handlers and trainers at all levels.
